Tour name: Kumarakom Village experience
Destination: Kumarakom, Kerala
Duration: 3 Hours
Pick-up/ Drop point: Residing hotel/resort at Kumarakom
Mode: Canoe trip
Kumarakom is an idyllic backwater village bordered by Vembanad lake on its western side and vast expanse of paddy lands, swaying coconut farms to the eastern side. Between this lies the village life on little islands with numerous crisscrossing canals. It is this intricate network of canals, the natural setting along its stretches and livelihood activities of the community that makes this backwater village a unique and a rich production landscape. The rural life of Kumarakom is thus a must visit for a memorable experience when you are here.
We start from the hotel/ resort in an auto rickshaw to Kavanattinkara where our Kumarakom village experience visit begins. This place is next to the entrance gate to Kumarakom bird sanctuary. It should be 10-15 minutes ride from your hotel/ resort. Our guide will meet you there and give a brief introduction to the Kumarakom village experience visit. The country boat that takes us through this village visit will be already there waiting for your arrival.
We proceed to see the various livelihood activities of the people and a glimpse of the village life. All around you could see swaying palms in Kerala and the name itself means land of ‘Kera’ or Coconut. We would see a coconut plucks coconut. Further we join a woman weaving coconut palm leaf for thatching roof or for their fence. Moving ahead we could also see woman engaged in screw pine weaving. Back at your home country you may have seen doormats made natural coir fibre. Coir industry is another traditional industry and the activity that you could see is woman spinning fibre of coconut husk to make coir from coconut husk. While moving though the canals we can see the method by which people here using a bow and arrow to catch fish in moving water. Further we could also see the cast netting method to catch fish After a while you could see a toddy tapper high up at the coconut tree tapping toddy. Toddy is kind of fermented local liquor, made from the sap of the coconut palm. These are some of the activities and village life that one will have the opportunity to see.
You can never experience this diversity of the village life unless you are in a village here at Kumarakom. Your visit will be a memorable experince and might be the highlight of your holiday here.

Kerala houseboats are one of the most popular attractions in the tour circuit of Kerala and a must see if you happen to come for holiday in Kerala. The Kerala houseboats in the backwaters are locally known as ‘Kettuvalloms’. Any traveler to the God’s Own Country would make it a point to visit the backwaters and lazily cruise along the scenic stretches.
Houseboats that we see now were traditionally used as cargo carriers for transport of spices, grains, coir products and other cargos to various parts of the state through its backwater – canal system that run parallel to the Arabian coast. Now transformed as a unique tourism product, it boasts of having facilities just as rooms in any hotels, with sleeping areas, attached bathrooms with western facilities, dining area and kitchen. The houseboat comes with single bed room (to accommodate a couple) to boats with five bedrooms or even more at present.
Though you see different ways of classifications by operators, namely standard, deluxe, superior, premium, luxury etc, the only official classification of houseboats that exist at present is based on the guidelines stipulated by the Kerala State Tourism Department. This is aimed at maintaining the quality, service, safety standards and that does less harm to the fragile ecology of the backwater region. With the popularity of this unique tourism product increasing ever season the department see this as an initial step to make this tour product sustainable
According to this system of classification the houseboats are categorized under ‘SILVER STAR’, ‘GOLD STAR’ and ‘GOLD STAR with GREEN PALM’. Those houseboats satisfying the essential guidelines are certified as SILVER STAR. Houseboats that satisfy the essential conditions and at least five of additional ten optional conditions are certified as GOLD STAR and those houseboats that satisfy, essential conditions, optional conditions together with those adhering to eco friendly measure are certified as GOLD STAR with GREEN PALM.
